January 28 Things are starting to thaw. After over three days of being below freezing, we managed to get to a balmy 39 degrees (Farenheit) this afternoon. Unfortunately, this has not helped the parking lot here much at all. There are some ruts in the ice coating, but in the traffic lanes the pavement isn't visible. I know this for sure---I was out getting the ice sandwich off my windshield around 4:00 p.m. Ice sandwich? Yes, that would be two pieces of ice with snow sandwiched between them. Several inches thick. It wasn't hard to convince it to come off the windshield, since the sun had been on it for a while and had loosened it a bit. While I was out, I saw several people slipping and sliding, on foot and in cars. I'm not sure why the lot hasn't at least been sanded, but I'm guessing that the demand for such work to be done has been greater than the supply of people and machines and sand to make it happen. Anyway, I'm hoping to be able to get out tomorrow. It's supposed to warm up fairly early, and get much warmer than today. Much melting is predicted. One can hope. Text © copyright 2000-2004 Becky
